Renowned scholar K’ang Yu-Wei was a utopian philosopher who advocated reforming China into a constitutional monarchy. He had an international following and created several Chinese Empire Reform Associations similar to the one established in Fresno in 1905. Various Chinese expatriate communities revered him as a prophet and Confucian scholar. In addition to gathering funding, these associations also trained soldiers to return to China to aid the reformation.
