During the first decade of the twentieth-century Thomas J. Ockenden’s General Store was located just south of Shaver Lake. The Ockenden Ranch became a destination for many visitors that rode the stage up the steep and crooked Tollhouse road into the mountains to beat the summer heat of the San Joaquin Valley. Within a few years, several lodges were built to host vacationers for weeks or months during the summer. Fishing, hunting, swimming, boating, and other outdoor actives were coordinated by the lodges as part of the boarding fee to help entertain their guests.
