Boating has been a draw to lakes in the California mountains since the first dams were built to create mill ponds for the nineteenth-century logging companies. As the San Joaquin and Kings Rivers, dams created hydroelectricity or irrigation for the Valley and the lakes at Shaver, Pine Flat, Millerton, and Huntington drew even more boating enthusiasts. While speed boats are currently more common, eastern Fresno County also had a history of sailing. Beginning in 1945, a group of twenty-two sailing enthusiasts formed the Millerton Lake Sailing Association on the newly formed lake and the first High Sierra Regatta Sailing Race was held at Huntington Lake in 1953.
