The novelty of the huge redwood trees offered several photograph opportunities to prove to friends back home that visitors were not exaggerating on size of the trees. At the time, the Forest Service disapproved of campers and picnickers because they increased the risk of forest fire. It was not until the 1920s that designated picnic areas were created to limit the risk of fire and pollution. This was just the beginning of California’s fascination with the majestic Sierra Nevada.
