Before the automobile became affordable, traversing the mountains via horse and buggy or open-sided stagecoach could prove to be difficult. By the 1910s, however, many San Joaquin Valley residents could temporarily escaping the summer heat to picnic in the mountains such as the Grey, Manheim, and Short families pictured here. In addition to the lure of the cool mountain air, the novelty of the huge redwood trees offered several photograph opportunities to prove to friends back home that visitors were not exaggerating on size of the trees.
