After the Central Pacific Railroad came to Fresno in 1872 businesses started popping up all around the train station starting from Front Street (also known as H Street), and "Eye" Street (I Street now Broadway) and Mariposa running east/west. Here, Kutner and Goldstein were one of several to open a general store. Starting in 1874 from a 25 x 60 room, they grew into three large departments that offered delivery service for their customers' convenience. They printed their own "bank" notes and eventually opened the Farmer's Bank of Fresno on the southeat corner of Mariposa and I Street.
