Porteous's ideas, combined with those of fellow-inventors, led to the development of the Fresno Scraper in 1883. Later, he formed the Fresno Agricultural Works and produced thousands of Fresno Scrapers between 1884 and 1910. As one of the most important agricultural and civil engineering machines ever made, the Fresno Scraper, in 1991, became an International Historic Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers
