Circa 1910.  Before moving to California, Dr. Rowell was a Union soldier in the Civil War. He took part in several battles between 1861 and 1864, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg. Dr. Rowell moved to fresno in 1874 to practice medicine and, in September 1876, he established the Fresno Republican newspaper. In 1912, Dr. Rowell was elected mayor of Fresno and by 1914 he commissioned the city's first skyscrapper, the Rowell Building.
