Former Sheriff of Mariposa County, Captain John Boling, was the first white man to ever see the Yosemite Falls and Valley in 1850, during an Indian war, in which Boling and his party drove the Native Americans who took refuge at Yosemite. Afterwards, Boling became Sheriff of Mariposa, and was generally known and respected. He died at the age of 42 from consumption on died June 17, 1864, leaving a wife and children.
