Program: Earth, Straw & Sun: Adobe Architecture in the San Joaquin Valley, Karana Hattersley-Drayton, M.A.

The San Joaquin Valley has a rich architectural heritage of buildings constructed of earth, whether molded into bricks, pushed into forms or cut as whole blocks from the hardpan. These buildings cross ethnic and class lines from the modest hand-built cottages of Highway City and Pinedale to Kearney Mansion, the architect-designed California ranch residences of Fresno and Bakersfield and the garden offices along Shaw Avenue in Fresno. This illustrated talk will include images taken throughout the San Joaquin Valley.

Karana Hattersley-Drayton, M.A. served as the Historic Preservation Officer for the City of Fresno from 2002-2017.  She first gained an interest in adobe construction as a graduate student in Architecture at U.C. Berkeley.

Thank you to Fig Garden Woman's Club for hosting the lecture in their historic Club House.
